Twin pregnancy may developed when there is a single or two zygote formed during fertilization and eventually split up into two after how many weeks. This is a case that occurs with a ratio of one in eighty pregnancies.
Development. Twin pregnancies have two types, the first one is identical and the second is fraternal. In fraternal twin pregnancy, two sperms penetrate a single ovum , which formed two zygotes with separate umbilical cords and placenta. Meanwhile, identical twins occur due to the separation of one fertilized egg into two. So, there are two babies present with different umbilical cords, but share a single placenta. They are in fact genetically identical. When the identical twins fail to separate, it will result to conjoined twins.
Factors. One factor why there is the occurrence of twin pregnancy is precisely because of the release of two ovum from the ovary. This usually takes place when women reach beyond 30 years old. Such delayed pregnancy might lead to changes in steroidal hormones.
Signs and symptoms. The following are the twin pregnancy symptoms: •The weight gained by most mothers with twin pregnancies is double as those with normal pregnancies. •Morning sickness with nausea and vomiting is manifested in half of the pregnant women. •Uncomfortable feeling and insomnia may also be felt. •Food craving is common. To maintain the nutritional support for the two fetuses, the mother needs to eat a lot and even make different food choices every now and then. When the two fetuses increase in size, the tendency is it presses the vein in the pelvis of the mother so the water may be pushed down, causing edematous lower limbs.
Health complications. Many complications may occur especially to the mothers having twin pregnancy. These may lead to: •Early labor and delivery. •Caesarian section may be recommended. •Growth of abnormal tissues in the uterine lining may form. •Several birth defects may result. •When there is an excess in the amniotic sac fluid, fetal death is possible. •Hypertension and anemia may also developed throughout the pregnancy period. •Post partum hemorrhage or excess blood loss may also occur which may result to maternal death. •Breathing problems may occur during labor and delivery since the mother may acquire gestational diabetes.
Frequent health check to monitor the growth and development of the babies and their health is recommended to avoid health complications. Furthermore, nutritional supports is recommended unless it is prescribed by the doctor; this is very necessary for the overall maternal and fetal health.
