In addition, fat can gather in the eyelid, and fluids can accumulate and cause swelling. Sun damage can make the problem worse. Puffiness around the eyes can also be caused by allergies or excessive consumption of salt. Smoking can aggravate the problem. Genetics may play a factor in bag formation and dark circles.

The most common reason is your fluid intake. Morning puffiness comes from water retention. Fluid collects under the eyes, especially when a person is horizontal. If you drink excessive amounts of alcohol, this is a natural reaction to it from your body. Alcohol caused dehydration worsens the effect by making the eye-bag skin look like crepe paper. You may not get enough sleep which also can cause that tired looking, baggy eye. Crying is also a cause of them. Cut 2 slices or, if you prefer, 5 to 10 very thin slices, several for each eye. Either method works. Spritz eye area with water. Lying down, place the potato slices on your eyelids and leave in place for at least 10 minutes for best results. If you have sensitive skin, the potato juice may be irritating for some people.

You can make these ahead and store them in a ziplock bag in the freezer to use whenever needed.

PUFFY, SWOLLEN EYES

# Puffiness is extra fluid under the eyes. Drink lots of water to flush toxins. Sleep on your back. Clients with the puffiest eyes often sleep on their stomachs. # To reduce swelling and for bags under the eyes, brew a cup of strong rosehip tea. Soak 2 cotton balls in the tea or use 2 tea bags, lie down and place over the eyes.

# Take tea bags and soak them in warm water and use them as eye pads.

# Soak cotton pads in cold milk and place over closed eyes for five to ten minutes.

DARK CIRCLES UNDER EYES

# Cut a fresh fig in half, place a half over each eye.

MEDICAL APPROACHES TO EYE BAGS, DARK CIRCLES, AND PUFFINESS

Dermatologists talk about a paradigm shift in eye-bag treatment. (These happen with exciting frequency in the fertile beauty sciences.) Youthful is fuller, more voluptuous, more three-dimensional volume. Alas, youthful is also more and more elusive with age. Creams help at 35, and fat injections help at 45. But when eye bags begin really to droop, they may need surgery, lasers and fillers, not to mention periodic touch-ups. That is, until the next paradigm shift comes along.
