Does Ginger Help Morning Sickness?

Ginger, that Asian root herb with the indescribable flavor, has been a longtime go-to home-remedy choice of people around the world for as long as anyone can remember. One of its most basic functions as a home remedy has always been to help with stomach upsets. The active ingredient in ginger, 6-gingerol, helps with stomach problems in large part with its power to help calm down the muscles of the digestive system. There are other stomach-related conditions that Ginger can help with too – nausea and seasickness being a couple. Researchers who have been looking at how effective ginger can be with nausea, have for long wondered about how well it can function calming an expectant mother down when she has all the nausea to do with pregnancy. In short, researchers have been trying to see if ginger can help morning sickness.

Somehow, science doesn’t work in any way that intuition favors. When researchers tried administering pregnant women with ginger to help morning sickness what they found was barely encouraging. When they compared this data on ginger to what other home remedies could do, the takeaway was that ginger wasn’t really reliably helpful. It certainly could help morning sickness in some expectant mothers. But in the first 20 weeks of pregnancy, when morning sickness is at its most troublesome, ginger doesn’t really do much. In fact, it does the opposite in pregnant women of what it does with regular people. It caused heartburn.

There hasn’t been any real explanation yet for why ginger should help nausea from, say, chemotherapy, but not with pregnancy. But it’s completely proven that it doesn’t help. Other things that don’t help, happen to be acupuncture and vitamin B supplements.

Quite apart from the bother that morning sickness can be, there are those that consider that it could be a sign of something. There are lots of old wives tales to do with predicting the sex of a child to be born that one gets to hear when one is pregnant. If you’ve ever heard anything about how morning sickness can help you determine if you are about to have a boy or girl, you mustn’t dismiss it as just one more tall tale. There have been real scientific studies done on this; and apparently, there is quite a bit of truth to these rumors.

While regular morning sickness has nothing to tell you about the gender of your baby, if you get superheavy morning sickness, the kind they call hyperemesis gravidarum, that certainly is your clue that you are pregnant with a girl. In fact, you could be 80% sure of it.
