Anxiety and Panic: Gaining Control Over How You’re Feeling
What is anxiety?
Anxiety can be a normal “alarm system” alerting you to danger. Imagine coming home and finding a burglar in your living room. Your heart beats fast. Your palms get sweaty. Your mind races. In this situation, anxiety can provide an extra spark to help you get out of danger. In more normal but busy situations, anxiety can give you the energy to get things done.

But sometimes anxiety can be out of control, giving you a sense of dread and fear for no apparent reason. This kind of anxiety can disrupt your life.

Are there different types of anxiety?
Yes. Anxiety can be a general feeling of worry, a sudden attack of panicky feelings, or a fear of a certain situation or object.

What is generalized anxiety disorder?
Generalized anxiety disorder is ongoing worry or fear that isn’t related to a particular event or situation, or is out of proportion to what you would expect–for instance, constantly worrying about a child who is perfectly healthy.

Symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder include muscle tension, trembling, shortness of breath, fast heartbeat, dry mouth, dizziness, nausea, irritability, loss of sleep and not being able to concentrate.

What is panic disorder?
Panic disorder is another type of anxiety. It occurs when you have repeated periods of extreme panic, called panic attacks.

Suppose one day you’re getting out of your car to go to work. Suddenly, your chest feels tight. Your heart races. You begin to feel dizzy and faint. You start to choke. You feel as if you could be dying. Was it all in your head? No. Most likely, you had a panic attack.

Panic attacks typically last about 5 to 30 minutes and may include any of the symptoms listed in the box below. Panic attacks can lead to phobias if they aren’t treated.

Panic attack symptoms
•Feeling like you’re going to choke
•Chest pressure or chest pain
•Pounding heart
•Racing pulse
•Dizziness or lightheadedness
•Shortness of breath or tightness in the throat
•Sweating
•Trembling or shaking
•Nausea
•Tingling or numbness in the hands or feet
•Hot flashes or chills
•Sense of unreality or dreamlike sensations
•Extreme fear of losing control, doing something embarrassing, going “crazy” or dying

Thehealthtime.com

Seasonal Affective Disorder
What is seasonal affective disorder?
Seasonal affective disorder (also called SAD) is a type of depression that is triggered by the seasons. The most common type of SAD is called winter-onset depression. Symptoms usually begin in late fall or early winter and go away by summer. A much less common type of SAD, known as summer-onset depression, usually begins in the late spring or early summer and goes away by winter. SAD may be related to changes in the amount of daylight during different times of the year.
______________________

How common is SAD?
As many as half a million people in the United States may have winter-onset depression. Another 10% to 20% may experience mild SAD. SAD is more common in women than in men. Although some children and teenagers get SAD, it usually doesn’t start in people younger than 20 years of age. For adults, the risk of SAD decreases as they get older. Winter-onset SAD is more common in northern regions, where the winter season is typically longer and more harsh.
______________________

What are the symptoms of SAD?
Although your symptoms are clues to the diagnosis, not everyone who has SAD experiences the same symptoms. Common symptoms of winter-onset SAD include the following:
•A change in appetite, especially a craving for sweet or starchy foods
•Weight gain
•A drop in energy level
•Fatigue
•A tendency to oversleep
•Difficulty concentrating
•Irritability and anxiety
•Increased sensitivity to social rejection
•Avoidance of social situations and a loss of interest in the activities you used to enjoy
Symptoms of summer-onset SAD include:
•A loss of appetite
•Weight loss
•Insomnia
•Irritability and anxiety
•Agitation
•Increased sex drive
Either type of SAD may also include some of the symptoms that are present in other forms of depression. These symptoms include feelings of guilt, ongoing feelings of hopelessness and physical problems (such as headaches).

Symptoms of SAD keep coming back year after year. They also tend to come and go at about the same time every year. The changes in mood are not necessarily related to obvious things that would make a certain season stressful (like regularly being unemployed during the winter).

Is there a treatment for SAD?
Yes, treatment is available for SAD. Winter-onset SAD is most likely caused by your body’s reaction to the lack of sunlight. Light therapy is one option for treating this type of SAD because increased sunlight can improve symptoms.

If your doctor suggests you try light therapy, you may use a specially made light box, or a light visor that you wear on your head like a cap. You will sit in front of the light box or wear the light visor for a certain length of time each day. Generally, light therapy takes about 30 minutes each day throughout the fall and winter, when you’re most likely to be depressed. If light therapy helps, you’ll continue it until enough sunlight is available, typically in the springtime. Stopping light therapy too soon can allow the symptoms to come back.

When used properly, light therapy seems to have very few side effects. However, some side effects may include eyestrain, headache, fatigue, irritability and inability to sleep (if light therapy is used too late in the day). Light therapy should be used carefully in people who have manic depressive disorders, skin that is sensitive to sunlight and/or medical conditions that make their eyes vulnerable to sunlight damage.

Tanning beds should not be used to treat SAD. The light sources in tanning beds are high in ultraviolet (UV) rays, which harm both your eyes and your skin.

Your doctor may also want you to try medicine or behavior therapy to treat your SAD. If light therapy or medicine alone doesn’t work, your doctor may want you to use them together.

Thehealthtime.com

Stress: How to Cope Better With Life’s Challenges
What causes stress?
Feelings of stress are caused by the body’s instinct to defend itself. This instinct is good in emergencies, such as getting out of the way of a speeding car. But stress can cause unhealthy physical symptoms if it goes on for too long, such as in response to life’s daily challenges and changes.

When this happens, it’s as though your body gets ready to jump out of the way of the car, but you’re sitting still. Your body is working overtime, with no place to put all the extra energy. This can make you feel anxious, afraid, worried and uptight.
____________________

What changes may be stressful?
Any sort of change can make you feel stressed, even good change. It’s not just the change or event itself, but also how you react to it that matters. What’s stressful is different for each person. For example, one person may feel stressed by retiring from work, while someone else may not.

Other things that may be stressful include being laid off from your job, your child leaving or returning home, the death of your spouse, divorce or marriage, an illness, an injury, a job promotion, money problems, moving, or having a baby.
____________________

Can stress hurt my health?
Stress can cause health problems or make health problems worse. Talk to your family doctor if you think some of your symptoms are caused by stress. It’s important to make sure that your symptoms aren’t caused by other health problems.
____________________

Possible signs of stress
•Anxiety
•Back pain
•Constipation or diarrhea
•Depression
•Fatigue
•Headaches
•High blood pressure
•Trouble sleeping or insomnia
•Problems with relationships
•Shortness of breath
•Stiff neck or jaw
•Upset stomach
•Weight gain or loss
____________________

What can I do to manage my stress?
The first step is to learn to recognize when you’re feeling stressed. Early warning signs of stress include tension in your shoulders and neck, or clenching your hands into fists.

The next step is to choose a way to deal with your stress. One way is to avoid the event or thing that leads to your stress–but often this is not possible. A second way is to change how you react to stress. This is often the more practical way.
____________________

Tips for dealing with stress
•Don’t worry about things you can’t control, such as the weather.
•Solve the little problems. This can help you gain a feeling of control.
•Prepare to the best of your ability for events you know may be stressful, such as a job interview.
•Try to look at change as a positive challenge, not as a threat.
•Work to resolve conflicts with other people.
•Talk with a trusted friend, family member or counselor.
•Set realistic goals at home and at work. Avoid overscheduling.
•Exercise on a regular basis.
•Eat regular, well-balanced meals and get enough sleep.
•Meditate.
•Participate in something you don’t find stressful, such as sports, social events or hobbies.
____________________

Why is exercise useful?
Exercise is a good way to deal with stress because it’s a healthy way to relieve your pent-up energy and tension. Exercise is known to release feel-good brain chemicals. It also helps you get in better shape, which makes you feel better overall.
____________________

Steps to deep breathing
•Lie down on a flat surface.
•Place a hand on your stomach, just above your navel. Place the other hand on your chest.
•Breathe in slowly and try to make your stomach rise a little.
•Hold your breath for a second.
•Breathe out slowly and let your stomach go back down.
What is meditation?
Meditation is a form of guided thought. It can take many forms. You can do it with exercise that uses the same motions over and over, like walking or swimming. You can meditate by practicing relaxation training, by stretching or by breathing deeply.

Relaxation training is simple. Start with one muscle. Hold it tight for a few seconds then relax the muscle. Do this with each of your muscles, beginning with the toes and feet and working your way up through the rest of your body, one muscle group at a time.

Stretching can also help relieve tension. Roll your head in a gentle circle. Reach toward the ceiling and bend side to side slowly. Roll your shoulders.

Deep, relaxed breathing by itself may help relieve stress (see the box to the right). This helps you get plenty of oxygen and activates the relaxation response, the body’s antidote to stress.

If you want more help treating stress symptoms, ask your family doctor for advice.

Thehealthtime.com

Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD)
What is premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)?
PMDD is a severe form of a common problem called premenstrual syndrome, or PMS. About 75 percent of women of childbearing age have some PMS problems. About 2 to 10 percent of women in this age group have PMDD.

How do I know if I have PMDD?
The symptoms of PMDD are:

•Sadness and crying
•Feeling nervous, anxious, and irritable
•Anger or irritability
•Strong cravings for certain foods
•Problems paying attention and concentrating
•Fatigue
•Physical problems such as breast tenderness, headaches, joint or muscle pain and swelling or bloating
•Trouble sleeping
These symptoms can affect your relationships and work ability. If you have some of these symptoms 10 to 14 days before your period and they improve when your period starts, you might have PMDD. Your family doctor can help you find out for sure.

What causes PMDD?
The exact cause of PMDD is not known. Changes in hormones related to your period may cause PMDD. Stressful life events and a family history of PMS or PMDD may increase your chances of getting PMDD. Major depression is common in women who have PMDD. However, not all women who have PMDD have major depression.

How does my doctor find out if I have PMDD?
Your doctor will check your symptoms and the way they relate to your menstrual cycle. You might fill out a symptom chart (like the one below) for several weeks. There is no test that can diagnose PMDD.

Daily Symptom Report

Severity scoring for each symptom:

0 = No symptom
1= Minimal or slightly apparent to you
2 = Moderate, awareness of symptom but does not affect your daily routine
3 = A lot, continuously bothered by the symptom and/or symptoms interferes with your daily routine
4 = Severe, symptom is overwhelming and/or unable to carry out your daily routine

Day 1 is first day of menses

Adapted with permission from Freeman EW, DeRubeis RJ, Rickels K. Reliability and validity of a daily diary for premenstrual syndrome. Psychiatry Res 1996;65:97-106.

How is PMDD treated?
Your doctor will ask you about how bad your symptoms are and will tell you about different treatments. For mild to moderate symptoms, your doctor may suggest changes in your diet and lifestyle. You might talk to a counselor about your PMDD symptoms and life stresses. Medicines may help with severe symptoms.

What medicines are helpful?
Certain medicines used to treat depression also treat PMDD. Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) help by increasing the effect of a brain chemical called serotonin.

Does that mean I have depression?
No. These medicines work for both conditions.

How often do I have to take these medicines?
Some of these medicines you take for 10 to 14 days before each period.

What if these medicines do not work?
Your doctor knows about other treatments. After talking with you, your doctor might have you try something else.

The depression is a very widespread disease. It assigns indifferently people of all the ages, all the mediums and all the lifestyles. How to distinguish the simple blow from cockroach of a major depression? Which are the symptoms?
Isabelle finds only very with difficulty the sleep and frequently awakes in middle of the night. She lost any interest for the writing of her last novel and feels guilty not to be able to devote more time to her children. She doesn’t want any to cook and eats without appetite. She has so much evil to concentrate that even its preferred television game discourages it, just like the advances of her husband whom she forsakes. Its state has afflicted it, it is more and more often the prey of black thoughts for more than two weeks. She judges herself without value, in turn irritable or amorphous, whereas she was so energetic.

Is Isabelle depressive or simply victim of a blow of cockroach?
The word “depression” standardized and indicates too often momentary states. When these symptoms persist during weeks or months and prevent a return to a “normal” life, they can be the first steps of a real depression. On the contrary, the depression is a state which continues in time and which it is advisable not to neglect.
This fall of psychic tonicity is characterized by:
A deep sadness and a loss of taste for formerly appreciated activities (hobbies, sex, etc): it is this principal symptom which can make it possible your doctor to diagnose. Certain patients can become tended or irritable. This excessive nervousness and this feeling of uselessness are accompanied by black thoughts which can go until suicidal impulses.
Changes of appetite or weight, a deterioration of the sleep: the depression can affect the body in addition to the spirit. Thus, certain people will be able to suffer from a lack of appetite whereas others compensate by taking weight. Same manner, certain people will have evil to fall asleep to awake in the middle of the night whereas others tend to sleep in an excessive way; Moods changeantes: in addition to the depressed state, the person can be the object of other emotional changes: an unjustified feeling of culpability, a lack of confidence in oneself and of incapacity. Certain people will flee the situations requiring of their share a catch of responsibility, of fear badly of making;
A difficulty of concentrating: these symptoms prevent the people efficiently studied and from working. In extreme cases, alleviating tasks become insurmountable. There are no characteristic symptoms, certain people can appear sad in an obvious way, others will rather feel an impression of tiredness or insomnia. Sometimes, the close entourage has great difficulty to have a presentiment of the importance of this disease and suspects light more easily depresses than a little will and some fine words will make it possible to surmount.

Like Isabelle, nearly 8% of the population knew a major depressive episode during the year past in France (Barometer health 2006). Among the most touched: woman, people living only and unemployed (DREES 2006). Depression, a true disease
The depression is defined like a feeling of sadness persisting, a loss of taste for the majority of the activities during one two weeks minimum duration. You shouldn’t feel fears or embarrassment to expose your state to your doctor. Only a knowledge of all the symptoms will enable him to carry out a precise diagnosis.

For the doctor, the depression term has a quite precise definition and, vis-a-vis such a disease, it will be able to prescribe you an adequate treatment: psychotherapeutic follow-up and/or drugs fighting against the depression.

Sleep disorders of the teenager

According to a study of the National institute of health and medical research, 40% of the provided education for teenagers often feel tired. From or this problem comes? How to find the rest?

Often related to the problems of sleep, tiredness must however be followed with attention and start by eliminating the most obvious causes.

Why the teenager sleep does badly?
Does it pass too much of time in front of its computer or these video games before lying down?
Does it consume too cola or of coffee, in particular in end-of-day?
Does it have anguishes related to a duty the following day?
If it has evil to find the sleep, you can start with him to propose, the evening before laying down it, of the remedies of grandmother like a good hot bath or a herb tea. If it is of a nervous disposition perhaps should it make yoga.

It is frequent that the teenager knows blows of tirednesses momentary due to a push of growth or an energy expenditure more important than usually. These “blows of pump” can disappear after a good night from sleep.

On the other hand, if tiredness persists several weeks, if it isn’t attenuated by the rest, if, moreover, it is accompanied by moroseness, it can then be a symptom of the depression.

If this tiredness is accompanied by giddinesses or excessive palenesses, it can be then due to a strong anaemia. In this case, it is important to speak about it with your attending physician.

Kleptoman hafta küçük bir hırsız hariç all!

Some current symptoms of anxiety
Be you in prey with of anxiety? To help you to recognize if, yes or not, you test anxiety, I took care to describe for you the most current symptoms in bond with this unpleasant emotion.
You point out that you can try out one or more these symptoms when you are anxious. In the same way, if you are simply concerned, it may be that you note the presence of some of these symptoms, but with a passably less degree.
Respiratory symptoms Breathlessness, fast breathing, not very major breathing, breathing haletante, pressure on the chest, swell in the throat, feeling to choke, stammering.
Cutaneous reactions
Sweats, tinglings, shivers or puffs of heat, redness to the face.
Cardiac reactions
Acceleration of the cardiac rhythm, palpitations, lipothymy or syncope, rise of the blood-pressure, lowers blood-pressure.

Symptoms of the digestive system
Loss of appetite, nauseas, pains and faintnesses abdominal, vomiting.
Muscular symptoms
Tremors, jolts in the eyelids, nervousness, reflexes of start, to go of length into broad, trembling legs, rigidity, insomnia.

Other symptoms Acne, asthma, constipation, diarrhoea, cutaneous eruptions, headaches, migraines, etc I encourage you to supervise closely the symptoms which you experienced when you feel of anxiety, especially so the aforementioned anxiety is frequent or intense. Then, notice in connection with which people, things or situations you distress yourselves often or much. However, avoid returning to you anxious in connection with the prospect to be anxious at the point such as this anxiety second will take the top. You possibly think of being anxious in connection with certain people, things or situations, then that in fact you test only one healthy concern.

thehealthtime.com
Measles

When panic attacks!

The crises of panic, they are these famous attacks of distresses which would relate to approximately 4 to 5% of the French population. It doesn’t not have parity on the matter: in two cases out of three the victims are woman.
Where does this disorder come? How to escape from it? Turn of horizon not to yield to your anguishes… the crises of panic have in common; to be characterized by repeated episodes of intense fear accompanied by extremely varied physical symptoms. It can to act of pains or feelings of thoracic or abdominal embarrassment, palpitations, nauseas, feelings of giddinesses or d’ smothering. Generally, these psychic disorders occur on a bottom of anxiety or of depression more or less permanent, at individuals particularly vulnerable to the surrounding circumstances and the stress.

A difficult diagnosis…

The physical symptoms can be in certain spectacular cases and resemble those which appear with occasion of a heart attack for example. A patient on two suffering of disorder panic thus will lead in a service of urgency hospital and to undergo many complementary examinations. But the diagnosis of disorder panics isn’t almost ever evoked by the specialist physicians of the medical emergency. Research of a cause with these symptoms can thus sometimes take several years, adding still a little more to anxiety and with the depression of the patient.

A true vicious circle

This delay with the diagnosis, and thus with the treatment, involves usually a passage to chronicity, it’s to say the increasingly frequent repetition episodes. The disorder panic is an acute demonstration of anxiety which generates itself its own anxiety. The dysfunction of the thought will be then reinforced, which will develop the problem still more. Each unsolved episode thus feeds a true vicious circle which plunges the patient in a quite comprehensible despair. With that adds a certain number of phobias gradually. Indeed, if l’ attacks of panic occurs in a typical location, the subject ” apprend” to avoid this situation and manages from there to fear all that can resemble closely it or by far. If on the contrary the attacks occur in varied situations, the phobias go little by little s’ to extend to a number increasingly larger of circumstances or places, gradually locking up the patient in true a ” prison mentale”. 20% of the patients suffering from disorders panics try to put an end to their days.

To include/understand to cure
Vis-a-vis this potential danger and with the vulnerability of the patients, l’ information concerning the disorders panics is d’ an major importance. It is essential to reassure the patient and his entourage. To include/understand what occurs, how the physical demonstrations of occur; anxiety, enables him to take a step in the assumption of responsibility of anxiety, of intolerance with uncertainty and chronic concern which characterize it. When a disorder panics was identified, in addition to information and education, the assumption of responsibility of the patient must associate a medicamentous treatment and measurements concerned with psychotherapy.

The anxiolytiques aren’t enough!

The antidepressant drugs and anxiolytic are prescribed start to limit extent of the anxious phenomena and to reduce the frequency of the attacks. For effective that it is, it should well be understood that this treatment alone is not enough to regulate the problem durably. It offers a relief and constitutes a base on which it is possible to rebuild the thought of the patient. That is here the therapies come into play known as ” behavioral and cognitives”.

It acts; to lead the person to become aware of her disorders and especially of what generates them. One then gradually will relearn with the patient to face the situations that he fears. He thus will include/understand that little by little; he doesn’t risk anything, that he will not die nor to become insane. The therapeutist helps with ” dismount” the scenario-catastrophe which impose on its imagination and to control positively; sequence of the thoughts which lead to an unreasoned anguish. For that, the therapeutist uses settings in scenes and practical exercises of setting in situation, gradual intensity. He also learns how with the victim to note this that it feels, which passes to him by the head when it is plunged in these situations anxiogenes. This kind of therapy can take few months at a few years, according to the profile of the patient and the gravity of his disorders. Led well by an experienced professional, it makes it possible to make disappear 70 to 90% disorders panics.
