What is a Banana Allergy?

Allergies are reactions to the substances in food. Some people are allergic to the protein content and other allergens. This reaction may not be severe if these substances are taken lightly or less often. The situation worsens when the consumption is continued without the person’s knowledge that there is an allergic reaction. When a person suffers from a banana allergy, the body produces chemicals to counter the protein ingested. This reaction can also occur due to the intolerance brought about by Vasco active amines, tree pollen or the sensitivity to latex.

Most of the times, a person may not single out this fruit as the cause of the reaction because of the assumption that fruits cannot trigger allergies. Since bananas constitute the staple food for some regions, people think that the body becomes immune to the allergens with time. For this reason, some people treat the wrong cause or assume that bananas are not the cause. The symptoms range from mild to severe. A person with an allergic reaction to tree pollen may have swellings and itchiness in the mouth after ingestion.  The swellings may worsen such that the patient cannot ingest anything through the mouth. Alternatively, they can clear out a few hours later. The throat might be itchy and inflamed. These symptoms are similar to those exhibited when a person has ingested a poisonous substance, hence the reason why a banana allergy may go unnoticed.

If it is a reaction to the latex, it may bring about queasiness, abdominal pains and presence of hives. In severe cases, the person may suffer from a condition known as anaphylaxis. The airway swells and reduces the amount of air in the body. It increases the heart rate because the lungs are depraved of the required amount of oxygen and can lead to heart palpitations. Internal organs may be damaged if this condition is not treated immediately and it can also be fatal.

Other symptoms that should be used in the diagnosis include a running nose, rashes and irritation.  Simple diagnosis of this condition involves the skin test for rashes or hives. Other medical examinations may be carried out for severe cases like anaphylaxis. If it is not clear what is causing the reaction, an elimination test can help clear things out.
In the treatment of a banana allergy, the basic reasoning is to avoid this fruit by looking for a substitute. There are other fruits that can provide the same nutrients as the bananas. If the condition is worsened by increasing the intake, a person can reduce the number of bananas taken in a week or change the preparation. If ripe ones are increasing the reaction, a person can take the green bananas mashed with potatoes or greens. However, this may not stop the reaction. Antihistamines can be administered to control the reaction.
